Most Expensive Defenders In Football



The defence line is a very important department of the team, a porous defence puts the team in a vulnerable position, so teams try as much as possible to acquire the best of experienced defenders to play in the position for their team.
Here we will examine how much some clubs have paid to make sure the team's defence is solid enough to keep out the opponent by shielding their goal keeper.


10. Ricardo Carvalho - FC Porto to Chelsea, £20m

Ricardo Carvalho joined Chelsea from FC Porto in 2004 after winning the champions league with the latter. Carvalho moved to the London club to join his former coach Jose Mourinho and spent six years before joining Real Madrid in 2010.

9. David Luiz - Benfica to Chelsea, £21.3m

Another Chelsea defender that cost a fortune, David Luiz is known for his never giveup attitude on the pitch, he is also as attack minded as much as he defends, little wonder Benfica will not take less than £21.3m from Chelsea for the services of their man in January 2011.

8. Lilian Thuram - Parma to Juventus, £22m

A defence power house in his days, winning lots of laurels, his move to Stadio Delle Alpi to play for 'the old ladies' cost a whooping sum of £22m, a money well spent has he help the Bianconeri to two Serie A tittles in his five fives stinct at the club.

7. Dani Alves - Sevilla to Barcelona, £23.5m

Dani Alves is a skillfull, pacy full back who joined Barcelona from Sevilla in the summer of 2008 and has proved his worth helping the team to Four La Liga titles and two Champions League triumphs

6. Fabio Coentrao - Benfica to Real Madrid, £25.2m

The Portugal international joined the all white team of Madrid from Benfica thou has not impressed so far but the money paid for him still ranks high.

5. Pepe - FC Porto to Real Madrid, £25.2m

The Portuguese centre-back joined Los Blancos in the summer of 2007 and although has had relative success in the Spanish capital, at times has also been controversial.
Pepe has stuck it out at the Bernabeu however and has won two La Ligatitles and the Copa Del Rey.

4. Alessandro Nesta - Lazio to AC Milan, £26.1m

In the traditional Italian style Nesta spent a decade at the San Siro when signing from Serie A rivals Lazio in 2002. The centre-back went on to play in three Champions League finals for the club - winning two - and also lifted two Italian league titles.

3. Rio Ferdinand - Leeds United to Manchester United, £30m

The Englishman was the most expensive defender in history of football for a decade and was also the British transfer record signing when he joined Manchester United from Leeds in 2002. The 36 year old is in his 12th season at Old Trafford and is still waxing strong. He was selected in the 2013 PFA Team of the Year.

2. Marquinhos - AS Roma to Paris Saint-Germain, £30.1m

The 19-year-old Brazilian became a huge acquisition for PSG when he was signed from Roma and joins centre-backs, Thiago Silva and Alex at the club. Marquinhos is a hot prospect for the future and could well turn out to be the most accomplished defender in the world in a few years time.

1. Thiago Silva - AC Milan to Paris Saint-Germain, £35.3m

Thiago Silva became the most expensive defender of all time in the summer of 2012 when he made the switch from Milan to Paris. The Brazil international helped PSG to their first title in 17 years in his first season at the club and looks on top of his game.
