Nigeria's U17 women national team came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over their Columbian opponent and a spot in the quarter final stage of the tournament going on in Costa-Rica.
Having lost their opening fixture to Mexico, Columbia shot to the lead early in the game through Rodriguez's headed effort in their second game of the group in the ongoing Fifa U17 Women’s World Cup played at the Estadio Alejandro Morera in Alajuela, Thursday morning, before the Africans put a goal into their net in both halfs to confine them to yet another defeat and confirm their exit from the tournament.
Nancy Acosta's well tailored cross reached Rodriguez who headed past a trapped goalkeeper Onyinyechukwu Okeke for the game's opener.
Knowing the danger of losing the match, given that they next face Mexico in their last game of the group, the Flamingoes stepped up their game and dominated every department of the match and soon got the deserved equaliser in the 26th minute with Bokiri curling in a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area.
Nkiyu’s girls could have doubled their lead few minutes later but Ihuoma Onyebuchi’s long range shot rattled the Columbia's crossbar. Nigeria continued to dominate but for their poor finishing coupled with master saves by Colombia’s goalkeeper Monica Florez who was superb in goal for the South Americans kept the score line even at half time.
Uchenna Kanu gave Nigeria their deserved lead 14 minutes into the second half to secure maximum points condemning the Colombians to their second defeat of the competition.
Nigeria face Mexico to fight for top place in the group in their last group game scheduled for Monday 3am (Nigeria time) at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica in San Jose. The Mexicans are tied on piont with Nigeria with 6points apiece but they lead the group with a +8 goal aggregate after defeating Columbia and China PR 4-0 each, while Nigeria is second with a +2 goal aggregate.
