Brazil 0 v 3 Netherlands: Dutch thump Brazil, clinch 3rd place
Netherlands ended their World Cup Campaign on a high by defeating host, Brazil three goals to nil and earn themselves the Bronze medal at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
Robin Van Persie Scored from the penalty spot very early in the game, Daley Blind capitalised on a poor clearance by David Luiz to shoot into the roof of the net and make it two before half time then Georginio Wijnaldum lashed onto a low cross deep into extra time to make it three and ensure the 'Oranje Boys' finish the 2014 edition undefeated.
Still hunted by the humiliating 7-1 defeat by Germany in the quarter finals, the Brazilians needed a win to earn a little respect from their fans but the Netherlands compounded their woes as the 'boo boys' were given more reasons to 'boo away' as the Brazilians fell to their second defeat at home in five days.
Scolari made six changes to the side that started against Germany; Captain, Thiago Silva returned to the starting lineup, Jo and Paulinho were prefered to Fred and Fernandinho respectively, while Maxwell, Ramires and Willian all got to start.
Luis Van Gaal made just two changes to his lineup against Argentina; Wesley Sneijder picked up a hamstring injury in the warm-up and was replaced by Jonathan de Guzman while Clasie came in for injured Negel de
Jong.
Brazil started brightly charging at the ball and looking like a team with purpose but their fire was quickly quenched as Netherlands were awarded a penalty in the 2nd minute of the game when Thiago Silva dragged back Arjen Robben as he ran towards goal and Van Persie stepped up to tuck in the ball high into the left hand side of Julio Cesear.
Despite Brazil's efforts to get back on level terms, it was Netherlands who extended their lead 15 minutes later. Arjen Robben once again was released on the left side of Brazil's defence and his deep cross was ahead back into play by David Luiz for an unmarked Blind in the box to control and shoot high into the roof of the net beyond Julio Cesear.
Undeterred by the situation, the Brazilians pushed for goals but with Pualinho headed wide before Oscar's low cross evaded everyone and David Luiz at the back post.
Fernandinho was introduced at half time for Luiz Gustavo and Brazil continued to battle to get back into the game after the interval with Ramires hitting narrowly wide after getting the better of Ron Vlaar.
Hulk came in for Ramires to add some attacking instinct to the team but to no avail as they once again conceded in the 91st minute when substitute Daryl Janmaat collected a pass from Robben down the right side and played a cut back low cross for Wijnaldum power home and end any hope of a possible comeback if any.
The defeat to Netherlands means Brazil suffered their second successive defeat at home for the first time since 1940, it also means its only the second time in the past 10 World Cup third-place play-offs that a team has failed to score.
The Oranje Boys celebrated with their fans and looks forward to life without their experienced players as this might be their last World Cup as most of them are already 30 years of age and their Coach, Luis Van Gaal will be joining Manchester United on his return from the World Cup.
