Maigari Impeachment: FIFA queries NFF
FIFA, the world football governing body, has requested that the Nigeria Football Federation [NFF] provide "a more detailed report" of its executive committee meeting of July 24.
FIFA is seeking explanation from the NFF following the removal of Aminu Maigari as president of the country's football federation through an impeachment process by the body's executive committee members in Abuja on July 24.
The NFF had sent FIFA "minutes of the meeting NFF Executive Committee held on 24 July 2014" but the world body now wants a complete report leading to Maigari's removal.
FIFA is also asking for the "precise accusations" that led to Maigari's sack.
"We have received from Mr Tolulope of the Nigeria Football Federation [NFF] secretariat the minutes of the meeting of the NFF Executive Committee held on 24 July 2014 and we have duly taken note of their content.
"We acknowledge the decision of some members of the NFF Executive Committee to start the meeting with an amendment of the agenda and to proceed with the removal of the president through a motion of impeachment. However, the minutes provide very little with regard to the convocation and the agenda of the meeting, the quorum, the conditions of the amendment of the agenda and if the president was offered the right to be heard - and on which precise accusations.
"In order to better ascertain the statutory ground of such an important decision, we ask you to provide us with a more detailed report. Indeed, we would like to know if the NFF statutes were correctly implemented," FIFA wrote to the NFF General Secretary, Musa Amadu this week.
However, FIFA reminded the NFF that "the dismissal of members of executive committees is a prerogative of the general assemblies" and stated that it is only during such gathering that suspensions can be confirmed or rejected.
FIFA, on the other hand, expressed surprise that after lifting its suspension on Nigeria, the country's football federation has continued to remain entangled in crisis.
"Finally we are surprised that following the recent lifting of the Fifa suspension - which should have appeased the interested parties - the situation has become so inextricable while elections are due to take place in less than a month. It was expected that the members of the current Executive Committee, including the president, would be together until 26 the August general assembly to report on the activities and go through the electoral process for those who wanted to run," FIFA stated.
The crisis in the management of Nigerian football took yet another twist when two members of the NFF executive committee, Chris Green and Yusuf Ahmed 'Fresh' were handed one year and six months suspensions respectively for alleged "anti-board activities."
A third NFF board member, Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande, is currently under investigation by the football federation for same offence.
Mike Umeh, who was vice president prior to Maigari's removal, has been acting as president pending when the NFF general assembly which also includes elections into the executive committee, holds in Abuja on August 26.
