Barcelona name Xavi as new captain
Barcelona have announced that Xavi Hernandez will captain the team henceforth succeeding the retired Carles Puyol.
Puyol called time on his footballing career this summer and Xavi who deputize him (Puyol) will take the armband on a permanent basis as he won his team-mates vote after deciding to remain at Camp Nou.
"The result of a vote between all of the members of the first team squad on Tuesday to nominate the four captains for the 2014/15 season was announced on Thursday. Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta, Leo Messi and Sergio Busquets, in that order, are the chosen players." a statement on the club's official website said
Xavi will be assisted by Andres Iniesta, who will be his immediate deputy, ahead of Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets in that order.
Last term, Victor Valdes was the third captain after Puyol and Xavi, but the goalkeeper left the club this summer after his contract expired. The Spaniard is currently recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury and is without a club.
Xavi has spent his entire career at Barcelona, playing for the team B before graduating to the senior team in 1998 and has made 723 Liga appearances for the Catalan giants scoring 83 goals.
