Top 10 Most Expensive Goalkeepers

In the game of football, having a quality goalkeeper can be the key to being a contender for the title, but, recent analysis has shown that, transfer fees paid for goalkeepers are substantially less than what football clubs pay for players playing in other positions in the team.

The goalkeeping department of the football team has become less celebrated compared to other departments in the team, as most football teams now spend more on players playing in the Defence, Midfield, and Attacking positions than they spend on players playing the goalkeeping role.

With all the argument above noted, the goalkeeping position also has it's own share of glamour in the transfer market,  as the transfer of some goalkeepers involved really huge some of money, beating the amount paid to sign a player in the supposed more glamorous positions.

Below is a list of ten of the most expensive transfers involving a goalkeeper in the history of football:

10. Hugo Lloris: the France international joined his current English Premier League club, Tottenham Hotspur from French side Olympique Lyon for €11million ($17.7 million)

9. Petr Cech: Dub the best goalkeeper in the Premier League, the chelsea goal tender cost his employer £11.5million ($18.6million) when he moved from Rennes to Chelsea in 2004.

8. Sebastien Frey: a good goalkeeper but had turbulent time establishing himself in the team. Frey joined Italian side Inter-Milan from France modest club, Cannes for a fee of £12.5million ($20.2million) but after failing to break into the first team, he was loaned to Verona for a year before he was then sold to Parma on his return.

7. Angelo Peruzi: Lazio spent a whooping £16million ($25.8million) to acquire the services of the Italy international from Inter-Milan  just a year after joining them.

6. Angelo Peruzi: Again? you will say. Yes he made the list again. The Italian goalkeeper moved around a lot and his move from Juventus to Inter-Milan in which £16.5million ($26.6million) exchange hands between the two clubs puts him on the list again.

5.David De Gea: undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers in the EPL so  trust me when I say he did not come cheap. De Gea joined Atletico at the age of ten and grew through the ranks to become the clubs number one shot stopper before Manchester United priced the youngster away from in a deal worth £17.5million ($28.2million).

4. Sebastien Frey: the eventual sale of Frey by Inter-Milan  to Parma on return from a year loan at Veron is another deal in which huge money exchanged hands for a goakeeper, the sum of £18.5million ($29.8million) was what Parma paid to lure Frey away from San-Siro.

3. Francesco Toldo: the tall lanky goal tender will be remembered for his performance during the EURO 2000 tournament in Portugal, where he replaced injured Buffon who broke his hand days before the tournament started.
Another goalkeeper whose transfer involved lots of money, Toldo, joined Inter-Milan from Fiorentina for a fee of £23.5million ($37.9million).

2. Manuel Neuer: the German goalkeeper joined Bayern Munich from Shalke 04. Thou Shalke fans were not pleased with the move, it did not stop the Bavarians from paying £24million ($39.5million) for there priced asset who has proved to be a good investment so far.

1. Gianluigi Buffon: at 36 years of age, Buffon still contend actively for the best goalkeeper the game of football will ever have, little wonder the amount  paid to bring him to come play for Juventus at Turin thirteen years ago still towers above every others.
Juventus paid a whooping £47.5million ($76.6million) to lure Buffon away from Parma in 2001 to replace Angelo Peruzi who they sold to Inter-Milan.
