Real Madrid Defeats Athletico 3-0, One Leg Into Copa del Rey Final

Real Madrid now has a big boost heading into the return leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final match against city rival, Atletico Madrid after the first leg ended 3-0.

Two deflected effort from Pepe and Di Maria and a smooth finish by Jese  was all the Capital team needed to brush past their rival and take a step into the final.

Atletico Madrid defeated Real Madrid at this stage last season to qualify for the final but they now have a huge obstatcle to climb when the second is played at the Vicente Calderon.

Thou declared fit on Tuesday, Gareth Bale missed out on the encounter with a calf strain, while Atletico also miss the services of David Villa who suffered a hamstring injury over the weekend in his teams 4-0 against Real Sociedad.

Atletico came into the encounter full of confidence after going three points clear at the top of the Liga table at the weekend had the first chance of the game as Iker Casillas was forced to a save by Arda Turan who met Juanfran's cross near the penalty spot.

Madrid took the lead on 17 minutes when Pepe's 25 yards shot struck Emiliano Insua and flew past Thibaut Courtois.

Atletico's Belgian goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois did very well to keep them in contention in the first half as he pulled two quick superb saves from Jese and Luka Modric.

The pressure continued in the second half as Courtois was forced to keep out Ronaldo's low shot.

The Belgian could do nothing to stop Jese however as he was beaten for the second time in the game in the 57th minute when a Di Maria delicate pass disserted the Atletico defence leaving Jese in a good position to slot pass him.

Real completed the victory in the 73rd minute as Miranda deflected Di Maria's 30-yard strike past Courtois, for the third goal of the game.

The loss brings to an end Atletico's 23 matches unbeaten run in all competition while victory for Madrid means there is every possibility of a Final match against Barcelona who won 2-0 at home to Real Sociedad.
